The Next Steps - Beyond Beginner
Using Oil or Acrylic -- with Kimberlee Maselli

A great class follow-up class for those who have taken a Beginning Oil or Acrylic class, or someone who hasn't painted in awhile and is feeling "rusty" and needs a refresher

We've had so many students who loved our Beginner workshops the past couple of years, and everyone asks "what is my next step?" It's this workshop!

In this class we will work with each student individually in the medium of their choice. Many students leave with one or two completed paintings, some of which they even frame....

NOTE: Students will paint from photos typically provided by the instructor to maximize your learning. If you DO bring your own photos...please NO photos of other people's paintings and figurative photos are not recommended for this class.

The following topics will be covered:
• How to simplify the subject matter into very basic shapes
• Basic Drawing skills
• A brush up on color mixing
• Getting past the difficult details and learning how to stay loose!!
• More instruction on how to use the brushes and other important beginner techniques

We will provide photos and still life from which students will paint. The instructor will also demo throughout the class

Take the Fear Out of Figurative Painting
with award wining figurative artist, Nicole Kennedy

Nicole is taking a new and different approach to this workshop and students will be painting from a LIVE, clothed model during this workshop. The focus will not be on painting detailed faces or portraiture but rather capturing the shapes, values, colors and essence of the figure. Students will begin by painting several small sketches to get warmed up, then move on to painting the live model in oil for the remainder of the day.

Students who have taken this workshop are amazed at how much they learn and are much less intimidated when painting figures!

Topics include:
• Viewing the lit model and identifying the shapes that make up light and shadow values.
• Getting the proportions correct in your drawings, sketches and painting
• Knowing where to simplify and where to add detail
• How to use light, shadows and edgest to enhance the three dimension of the figure
• Value and color will be discussed throughout the painting process.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: This class is designed for any student except beginners. If you have taken Nicole's Figurative classes in the past, this is also designed for you as the approach will be differ from previous workshop:

Paint Flesh Tones Like the Masters
with Dan Nelson

Dan Nelson is VERY passionate about flesh tones, especially when it comes to painting portraits! If you have ever painted a portrait and ended up with a muddy, plastic, overworked or dead looking flesh tones? Dan has developed this workshop to teach students some tried and true techniques for capturing the illusive glow of human skin that will have people marveling at your portraits!

Dan Nelson, a former designer illustrator and renowned painter of Raleigh scenes, is becoming equally known for his portraits and their life-like qualities.

This class will not be about creating the "perfect portrait" in one day but rather will guide students through painting several different flesh tones, guiding you to that "a ha!" moment.

You will learn the techniques of the following masters:
• Rembrandt (layers of carefully chosen browns)
• William Bouguereau (Greenish-grey underpainting, called "Giraselle")
• Maxfield Parrish (American's #1 illustrator, a mixed-media "subtractive" technique)
• Color matching based on Dan's photos

INTENDED AUDIENCE: ANYONE who would has some basic drawing skills and would like to learn how to accurately portray a variety of flesh tones.

To Paint Your Favorite Structure You Need to Start with the Perfect Drawing
with Dan Nelson

Have you ever done a painting and felt something wasn't right about the house or the angle of the boat? No matter how well you paint, if your drawing is off, the final painting is off.

We all have a favorite house, barn, street scene or even a boat that we would love to paint--when you start with an accurate drawing, you will spend more time painting and less time problem-solving and fixing mistakes.

This class will help you tackle one of the most challenging issues in painting...drawing and perspective. Dan will spend the first couple of hours teaching you the basics concepts of accurate drawing and perspective, helping each student individually. Then you will move to painting and work on angles, shadows, values, colors and the elimination of details.

Dan Nelson, a former designer illustrator and renowned painter of Raleigh scenes, is the quintessential instructor to take you through this process.

Please bring in your photo of a structure or object. If you don't have a photo, the gallery can provide one for you.

CLASS DESIGNED FOR INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED STUDENTS WITH AN EMPHASIZE ON GROWING YOUR SKILLS VIA CLASSICAL REALISM APPROACH.

This is a great ongoing class for students/artists whom seek guidance and instruction on works in progress. This will be a setting where you can bring in whatever you are working on, or it can be a painting you may want to start and need a little push to get going!

Nicole will work with each person individually at your level. Nicole will help you with fresh approaches and problem solving techniques to help you grow as an artist.

NOTE: Please come prepared with canvases, photos, whatever you are working on. Please don't bring photos from other artist's paintings to copy unless it is a classic master. Nicole will also crtitique your finished pantings as well.

Learn how to Control Color and Value to Create Better Paintings
NEW CLASS with Nicole Kennedy

After years of teaching, Nicole realized that most of her students, from beginner to advanced struggle with basically the same two issues: color and value relationships. Finally she offers this class to help everone get it straight once and for all!!

Value seems like a simple concept; light to dark....until you assign a color to a value and that's when the trouble begins. What value is that bright blue? What is the value difference between the forefround tree to the background mountain? What is the intensity shift? Is the shadow of the boat darker lighter than the water? How much contrast is too much or to little?

From low intensity to high key, values within one color family can be difficult to grasp, but when you start placing them beside objects of other colors, and thinking about the relationships of all the colors and values in your painting to each other, that's when you REALLY need to understand the fundamentals.

If you are serious about learning to paint, or have been painting awhile but aren't getting the results you want, this class is a MUST!


In Class we will:
• Look at photos to understand black and white and color
• Do some color mixing exercises to identify their values (this is fun)
• Learn how to mix high key and low key palettes
• We will also do a small painting or two using color/value principles to achieve the results you want

Using Dramatic Color & Bold Brushstrokes to Bring Your Paintings to Life

This workshop focuses on taking your plein air studies (you can bring photos if you need) to the next level...translating your "field" work into a dynamic studio piece while retaining the spontaneity and "honesty" of the plein air study. This is so much more challenging than it seems...a great class for any representational painter or landscape painter.

Day one will be devoted to outdoor plein air painting, then Days 2 and 3 will be inside and students will translate their plein air study into finished studio pieces. McClure's workshop will explore fundamental painting principles that include: Materials, Composition, Values, Shapes, Edges, Color Distribution, and specific Brush Technique. McClure is a master of color "temperature"shifts and focal point brushwork.

Painting with Rick McClure is a great opportunity for all artists from emerging to professional to help create more harmonious and focused results in your paintings.

Walking on Water
with Nicole Kennedy- award winning painter of water

Nicole has spent the last decade studying the nuances of painting water, recently winning major national awards with the American Impressionist Society and Audubon Artists in NYC .

Water is one of the most important elements to learn how to paint, simply because it appears in so many scenes and creates beauty like nothing else.

Nicole will share with you some tricks on how best to problem solve a few common water scenarios that best illustrate water properties; reflections on a calm surface, a coastal wave and the beauty of transparency.

Topics include:
• Identifying the deceptive colors and values that make up water.
• Creating reflections using simple brushstrokes
• Finding simple abstract shapes that define the water mass
• Determining light effects based on time of day
• Transparency and the play of shapes

NEW! Photo Editing Workhop - How to Fix Your Photos to Make Better Paintings
with Nicole Kennedy

How many times have you started a painting and realize halfway thru that your photo is too dark, too blue, too flat, too contrasty, too green, etc, making it so much harder to create the painting you had imagined. Well, it's not you...it's your photo.

This class will teach you how to edit your photos so that the outcome is more about your painting vision. Manipulating your photos so that they work FOR you, not against you can make a huge difference in executing your paintings.

This workshop will cover the basics of editing photos color, values and more using the Photoshop Elements application. However, some of the skills you will learn can be applied to all photo editing tools--including the ones that come standard with Windows or Mac.

Nicole will demonstrate on her computer projected onto a screen. Students will bring their own laptops or iMacs, with Photoshop Elements installed and will edit their own photos, using their own computers, under Nicole's guidance. You will be AMAZED at the difference in your photos (and paintings) after this workshop.

Topics include:

• Cropping and how critical it is to good painting composition.
• Use of levels and saturation to correct lighting, hues and unwanted contrast that digital cameras can add.
• Basic color and value correction to help mantain (or create) big shapes and value areas.
•Selecting specific areas to manipulate while not effecting other areas.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: Anyone who knows how to take digital photos, import them into their computer and print them out. You do NOT need to have any experience with Photoshop.

PURCHASING PHOTOSHOP OR PHOTO ELEMENTS: You don't need a copy of the full version of Photoshop to take the class, but you do need "Photoshop Elements" and it is widely available for under $100. The standard Photoshop software costs around $500-600 and is designed for professional or business users. Photoshop Elements will do absolutely everything you will learn about in this class.

Create a Gorgeous Painting in Pastels
with Diana Coidan

Diana Coidan is not only an award winning pastel artists, but is also a fabulous instructor who can teach to students of any level. Diana's "specialty" as an artist are clouds, water and animal scenes.

For this workshop Diana will teach students the basics of the pastel medium, then do a small demo painting. In the afternoon students will paint from their own photos and Diana will help you select the best photo for the medium. Students will go home with a finished piece of pastel art!

Whether you have some experience with pastels or are an oil/acrylic/watercolor artist, Diana can teach you the basics and make you comfortable with the lush pastel medium.

Introduction to Encaustics
with Sharon DiGiulio

Sharon DiGiulio is always creating something....from fabric handbags, pillows and raffia bowls to jewelry and oil paintings -- she is the definition of "creative".

Sharon's most recent creative passion is encaustic paintings. We thought they were so cool that we asked her to teach a workshop on them! Click here to read more about encaustics on Wikipedia.

Workshop Topics include:
• Introduction to the very basics of encaustics
• What supplies you need and how to use them

SUPPLIES: Bring at least six different surfaces to try, 8x10 or smaller, suggested are Ampersand's clayboard, encausticboard, raw wood or a rough piece of tile.

Any collage items you would like to incorporate, Xerox copies of the images and a heat gun (if you don't have one, Sharon will have one for students to borrow)

Painting FIGURES and STILL LIFE--
Inside & Out with Peggi Kroll Roberts
American Impressionist Society Master Painter (AISM) & Nationally Recognized Artist/Instructor

Peggi Kroll Roberts in internationally renowned for her joyful figures and still life paintings, and Nicole's Studio is thrilled to announce she will be at the galley in April 2012 teaching two consecutive workshops!

Peggi worked as a fashion illustrator before making the transition into fine art. Using intense color and value to accentuate her subject, she moved into fine art with a bold palette, a love for small paintings and a very loose style that achieves much with few but energetic brushstrokes. She prefers to suggest reality rather than render it.

Peggi has been teaching for over 25 years and students rave about how much they learn in her workshop. A recent student had this to say about Peggi's workshop: "Part of the journey of being an artist is to never stop learning. Sometimes that journey is more rewarding than others...Peggi Kroll Roberts falls under the category of a great teacher. She is generous with her knowledge and gives the student the tools to move to another level".

Day 1 will be spent indoors painting still life. Days 2 and 3 will be spent painting models (clothed) both inside and out, weather permitting. Course cost includes model fees.
