JOHN SWEEMER
“I graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago following World War II. Before finishing school I started working at a commercial art studio in Chicago and continued there until 1953 at which time I became a free-lance artist. I had my own studio in downtown Chicago , being there altogether 32 years. After that I worked out of my own home studio in Wheaton and later Warrenville, Illinois. I moved to North Carolina in 1997 to be closer to my son and his family.
My long time desire to do watercolor painting was put "on hold" as I worked as a graphic designer to support my family. After my three children were married I began in 1978 to attend classes at a local art league, which I became a source of inspiration and challenge to me. During that time I was privileged to be able to attend several watercolor workshops by nationally known painters. In a few years I became a signature member of the Midwest Watercolor Society. I am also a signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina (the only two societies I tried out for), and a member of the Fine Arts League of Cary.
My favorite subjects for painting are marine and harbor scenes. Actually I enjoy painting many other subjects too as it isn't the subject matter that is the most important thing to me, but rather the shapes, forms and light effects. I like strong contrasts.
I have been blessed with the interest people have shown in my work. Many have said that my work looks so peaceful and relaxing. Thinking about that I realized it is no doubt because I have an inner peace that has come from the "God of all peace." I thank heavenly Father for the ability He has given me to be an artist and to visualize on paper that which I appreciate and love to see.
Most of my paintings are in private collections. Through several galleries many of my watercolors are hanging in corporate offices, institutions and banks. Locally some of my work is shown at the Fine Arts League of Cary shows as well as other places. I have been honored with many awards.”
[Nicole’s Note: When asked how many ribbons and awards John has won, he wasn’t sure as there were ‘two shoe boxes full of them’ at home. His work can also be found in vast corporate collections].
