“High Key” is simply creating a palette where your colors are predominantly a lighter value. It is one of the best techniques for creating paintings that go from blah to beautiful by combining lighter colors in close values next to each other that naturally harmonize and saving the vibrant colors as accents. And it’s the cure for mud! Whether you are painting a simple still life, land, city or seascape, many paintings take on a whole new life when using a high key palette. Nicole who’s nationally awarded paintings are known for High Key color harmony will share tips on mixing “pretty colors” on your palette. But also encourage students to let loose and have fun exploring how high key can transform paintings from ok to wow!

. In this workshop we will work from photos provided by Nicole but artists are welcome to bring their own photos as long as they fit the criteria for translating into high key. Best to use your iPad or iPhone so we can adjust the values on site. Note: If you bring in your own "printed" photos the values should range appoximately 5 value (darkest) and lighter . Nicole will discuss what works best for best for higher key paintings and have a short presentation in addition to demo-ing.
